We’re Back to Posting After a Pause

Hello Precious Readers, I’m back! I have a lot of posts to catch up on and we are so thankful for your steady readership and loyalty. We really appreciate it!

Due to a family emergency, Grant and I had to take a slight break from the blog. And although it’s been taken care of, with hopefully positive results, it’s nice to be back in a space that allows us to get into the normal rhythm of our lives and to be posting articles again. We are also featuring a new location in the drama of our traveling lives with a surprise at the end of this series of posts. So strap in and let’s fly east from Kiev all the way to… Japan! Or more specifically, Tokyo!

To get to Japan, we actually flew westward to Germany and  then onto Paris before taking a looooong 12 hour flight over Siberia (not the most exciting scenery if you’ve booked a window seat) all the way to Tokyo. We arrived the next day around 8:00 in the morning. It was hard to get sleep on the flight, as Air France seats are not very big, so we arrived pretty exhausted.

We took the train from Narita International Airport to our Air B & B rental in the heart of Asakusa and were relieved once we settled into the apartment. The location of the Air B & B was perfect: there is a great view of the recently built Skytree and it is located about a 5 minute-walk from Sensoji Temple. We wanted to do something different for these blog pictures so we decided to take night photos. We hope you enjoy them!

(Grant posing in front of Nakamise-doori, a shopping street leading up to Sensoji Temple that has been there since the temple was founded a long time ago)

(Asakusa at night with another view of a shopping street leading off from the temple. These shopping streets still retain the architecture of “old Japan” and it’s like stepping back in time.)

(One of the main gates in front of the temple)

(Closer look at the giant hanging lanterns and the gate. To the right is the figure of a giant, said to have protected the temple in ancient times.)

(A pagoda on the temple grounds to the left)

(Front view of the pagoda)

(View of the front of Sensoji Temple. On the sides are stands where you can draw a stick from a canister and collect your fortune, called an omikuji. The rack on the right is where people tie their “bad” fortunes so that the temple can bless them away.)

(Grant on the left taking a picture of the temple gate from the back. The giant grass slippers hanging on either side is for the giants who were said to protect the temple back in the day.)

(Photo of a historical figure represented by dragons)

(We got to Asakusa just in time for the Sanju Matsuri festival. A large festival hosted by 3 different temples. These lanterns were put in place for the festival)

(Closer view of the festive lanterns)

(View of Tokyo Skytree from our rental. It changes color every night but happened to be blue on this night.)

Grant and I did return a few days later to draw our o-mikuji fortunes. Grant drew a “good fortune” and I drew a “best fortune” so we kept them instead of tying them to the rack. If you are interested in viewing photos of Sensoji Temple during the day or reading about the temple, click here for a previous post we did two years ago.
