A Lighthouse Calls

(Zadar, Croatia)

As Grant and I find our selves hurtling face-first into the middle of Autumn, we are noticing that the days are getting considerably colder and the sunny days are more and more interspersed by rainy ones. So when a nice warm day presented itself, we seized on the chance to explore more of the city outside of Old Town.

Standing at the edge of the Old Town peninsula and looking north, we can’t help but notice a lighthouse standing proudly on the coastline away in the distance. Grant mapped it out found it would be “walkable”.

Here are some of the discoveries along the way:

(A little boat marina just outside of Old Town)

(An old classic-style building… not an “official” description but it did get the approval of Grant)

(Looking out across the inlet to Old Town)

(A closer look at Old Town from the outside… I did mention the day was sunny, and not that it was clear)

(A newly paved section of the coastline)

Finally, we made it to the lighthouse:

We found a beach pebbled with locals and tourists. The water was very clear and blue:

(A sailboating class in session… thankfully, no one tipped over!)

The walk took about an hour and a half but was pleasant. At the foot of the lighthouse is a bar and restaurant. We decided to hold off on getting refreshments until we made our way back to Old Town.

What saved quite a bit of time and shaved half an hour off of our walk back was to take the transportation across the inlet known as “man in a row boat”. And that is exactly what it is. For the price of 5 Kunas per person (that’s about $0.80), a dude in a row boat will row you to Old Town. The whole trip takes about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, they don’t sing Italian arias at you like the gondoliers in Venice, but you really can’t beat the ticket price of $0.80… it’s still worth it!

When we got back, we settled for some drinks by the sea just in time for the sunset.

(I can’t, for the life of me, recall what cocktail this is)
