An Old Renaissance Bastion Turned Cute Park

Zadar is getting colder as we head into autumn but we do still get some clear sunny days. And when that happens, Grant and I love to walk and explore the town. One of our favorite places to walk to is the 15th Century Venetian Bastion that is part of the old town fortification. A bastion is the protruding section of a fortification built at an angle so that archers or guards can fire in several directions and get a good defensive advantage. The bastion at the southeast part of town is now a nice park to stroll through.

The first view you get as you walk in and follow along the wall is a view of the harbor and Land’s Gate. This 16th Century gate features a lion. Every other time Grant and I have come, we’ve spotted a boat with a fisherman working and his poodle perched upon the top of the boat. The dog is very patient as he is always there and never moves from the spot.

(The boat with the poodle is the third boat from the righthand lamp post. Unfortunately, not pictured here today)

Along the backside of the bastion is an outdoor cafe with comfy seats. At night, it turns into a bar and nightclub whose music can be heard across Old Town. Grant and I stopped here for an afternoon cappuccino.

(Notice that the base of the chairs and the table are old Roman column capitals, probably just something found laying around)

In the middle of the park there is a raised section, that was probably used as an armory, and you can climb up the stairs to get a good view of the city. It’s also a good spot for people to take selfies.

This park is really peaceful and a nice place to hang out during the day.

  1. We are trying to overcome our extreme jealousy! Ha ha, not really, but this is so exactly what we like to do the most – relax and soak up the local atmosphere, and marvel at the history. We are happy for you!,

    1. Same here! We love all the history in Europe, being able to get close enough to touch everything (even in the museums – touching not recommended). We also really enjoy the relaxed atmosphere as it suits our chosen lifestyle. Can’t wait to share more of it with you.
