(Zadar, Croatia)
The Church of Saint Donatus lies at the heart of the Old Town section of Zadar. It is an old Pre-Romanesque style building and was constructed in the 9th Century. It was placed on the northeastern part of the old Roman forum. Originally it was called Church of the Holy Trinity but was later re-dedicated to St. Donatus in the 15th Century. The builders used the scraps from the forum to build the church’s foundations. Although fighting during the Croatian War of Independence (1991 to 1995) occurred in Zadar, the Church of St. Donatus escaped damages.
A friend of ours was visiting when Grant and I took him around town for sightseeing when we came across a projected sign on the church. So we decided to check it out.
When asked what was happening in the church, a worker said he could explain in either German or English (since obviously none of us spoke Croatian). Because we are all learning German, we said we could do either language but he proceeded to explain to us in German that the Church was hosting a projected light exhibition inside using images from artifacts displayed in the Archaeology Museum across the street. This was the last weekend they were putting this exhibition on so we decided to buy a ticket and go inside.
Here is our video of the light show. We hope you enjoy it. The music is what was playing inside at the time.
