Adventures in Candle-Making

(Dublin, Ireland)

As Grant and I travel and settle briefly in a place, we don’t just fill our free time sightseeing. We’ve been enjoying doing domestic things as well. I love the arts and craft stores in the city. Just browsing through, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Irish are a creative lot.

At one of the craft stores, I saw a candle-making kit and thought it would make a fun project. Grant and I are good with our hands, so we tried it out. We found candle-making to be fun and enjoyable. The kit even came with fragrance, a cross between Irish Spring soap scented and “ocean breeze”.

(My favorite is the striped candle in the glass)

We had some extra olive oil lying around so Grant looked up some simple ways to create oil candles. I think it turned out nice:

I used the instructions at this link, but skipped buying the wick holders since I couldn’t find any. They came out better than I expected and pretty bright.

(Grant’s candle is in the middle and the flame is adjustable)

They work great as mood-lighting and kind of makes us feel like we’re camping out.
