Tirol Snowboarding Series: Stubaier Gletscher (Video)

April 1, 2017 (Tirol, Austria)

As the Spring crept up on us, we had one more opportunity to go snowboarding. The last time we had gone, which was to a mountain called Axamer Lizum, the snow was already starting to melt. We felt that if we were going to get one more snowboarding trip in, it would have to be at a higher elevation with a deeper snow base. We asked around and the consensus was to go to Stubai Glacier (Stubaier Gletscher in German). This ski slope is on a glacier. I was a little hesitant at first since I felt that if the snow was beginning to melt, than we’d be snowboarding on ice. But we decided to go anyways.

I’m really glad we did. The bus ride up was longer, it took about 2 hours to get there from Innsbruck, which already shortens your day on the mountain. Thankfully, the ski resort knows this and starts to discount the lift tickets at each hour.

This was our first time snowboarding on a glacier, and it was really nice. The ski slopes are a lot wider and there is a really smooth flat area that’s great for beginners and intermediate skiers wanting to work on carving technique, more like a snow field. This is different compared with ski slopes on the side of a mountain where the runs tend to be steeper and narrower. Also, the elevation is higher so the season here runs longest; sometimes even all year round. The only drawback aside from the distance is the price, which averaged about 10 Euros more for a lift ticket when compared to other nearby resorts.

We only got a handful of photos but we hope you enjoy our video:
